About me

Hi! I’m Raya Mae, the passionate dog lover behind Little Valentines. I grew up in sunny San Diego, California, but spent most of my life in Des Moines, Iowa. From a young age, I knew I had a special connection with animals, and I began dog training while still living in Iowa. My love for dogs only grew stronger, and I began training my own dog, Bear, for service work and sports, as well as titling under AKC in a variety of areas. Over the years, I’ve gained valuable experience working at dog daycares, dog training academies, volunteering at local rescues, and training under a variety of accomplished trainers. I’ve also worked as a professional dog walker, in-home pet caretaker, and sitter, learning firsthand what it takes to provide compassionate, high-quality care for pets of all kinds. Now, I’m excited to bring all of that knowledge and passion to you with my own dog walking, pet care, and dog training services. Whether you're looking for someone to take your dog on a fun walk, care for your pet while you're away, or help with training, I’m here to offer expert care that helps both you and your furry friends live your best lives together. I look forward to working with you and your pets!

Bear

Bear is my 6 year old standard Labrador Retriever. I got Bear at 2 months old, and began training with a mentor to have Bear become a service dog! Bear and I trained everyday, and got to experience different sports such as dock diving, rally, and agility. Bear might not be in the show ring anymore, but he is still the most handsome boy around! Bear is now a family dog, and loves to go for long car rides and spend weekends at the lake with my dad.

FAQ

  • I’m based in the Ravenswood neighborhood, area code 60640, near the intersection of Montrose and Clark, and I offer services to nearby areas within a reasonable commute. For longer commutes, I can accommodate occasional walks outside of busy hours (10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.) or overnight stays. If your area is outside my service range, I can recommend trusted professionals who cover your location.

  • We do not permit time with outside animals (such as neighborhood dogs or cats), off leash time, dog park visits, or strangers around your home or animals. While we understand some dogs may have “friends” or “girlfriend/boyfriend” pups in the area, unfortunately for safety purposes, we choose to keep pups separate during our time together.

  • I carry a lot of my own gear, but you have the option to have me use your gear! I carry a 6ft leash that is multi use, as it can be a “hands-free” leash, a “slip-lead,” and a standard handy regular leash. I prefer to use my own as I trust the heavy hardware.

I wear a fanny pack type treat pouch around my waist that carries the necessities for any dog walk, and will fill it with treats for our walks!

I also carry extra slip-leads, an extra collar (in case a collar breaks), an emergency kit for animals and myself, a backup phone, treats (please let me know of pet allergies!!), a long-line leash (for days we go to parks without other dogs or people), a clicker, a collapsible water bowl and food bowl, squeeze-y water bottle, tennis balls, tweezers, poop bags, kid-sized socks for paw injuries, and more.

  • I prefer to carry keys on my person. I have a label maker that I put the name of pets and your last name on, as well as a label with my company name, my name, and phone number. I carry these keys in a booklet for keys and put my keys for the day on a locking-carabiner for quick access.

However, if you prefer I do not carry a copy, I accommodate those with lockboxes, “hiding places,” returning keys to you, returning keys to door-persons, and more.

  • Our cancelation policy is determined by the service. For walks, drop in visits, potty breaks, and smaller services, the policy is as follows:

Services will be charged at 50% if canceled less than 7 days before the service is to take place, or placed as a credit with a rescheduling fee towards a different time. If the service is canceled less than 24 hours before the service is to take place, it will be charged at 100%.

Sittings are paid prior to beginning, and are due within 5 days of booking if the sitting starts more than 2 weeks from scheduling. If the sitting is to start sooner than that, invoices are sent and due within 24 hours of booking. For sittings, our cancelation policy is as follows:

Sittings canceled more than 7 days from the start of the service are charged at 50%, and 50% will be credited to your account for new services. Sittings canceled less than 7 days from the start of service are charged at 100%.

Holiday services that are excluding route work (those who have weekly walks or visits, or are on a template of some sort) are non-refundable and charged at 50%-100% due to the fact I am a solo worker, and it is difficult to replace lost funds last minute or offer my services to meet the demand of holiday seasons, such as Christmas week.

Invoices for services aside from sittings are due at the end of the month and will reflect any changes made throughout the month.

  • Holidays are first come first serve, but I do work holidays! I charge a holiday fee that can be found under our fees section, and you are encouraged to schedule sooner rather than later. Some holidays that I take fees on include, but are not limited to, Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year’s eve and New Year’s day, Valentine’s day, Thanksgiving day, MLK day, Memorial day, Independence day

  • Yes! I have hands on experience with many animals, such as reptiles, small rodents, birds, disabled animals, and “high needs” animals. I also take on services for tasks like plant watering while you’re away!

  • Little Valentines is fully insured with Pet Care Insurance to a high policy catered to insure all parties involved: your pet(s), yourself, your home, and Little Valentines.

While some emergencies are unexpected, we pay close attention to prevent as many outside factors as possible. Headphones or earbuds are not to be used, and while we strive to submit photos and videos, our attention is mainly on your pet(s) so photos may be minimal at times.

  • “After hours” refers to times not within the standard “9-5” workday. I do offer services in the early morning and evening, however these would be considered to be the uncommon times for visits, and a fee will apply. Fees do not apply to sittings that start during after hours!

  • My availability as a solo walker fluctuates, and is on a first-come-first-serve standard, especially for holidays and busier months (closer to Christmas and spring breaks). My peak hours are between 11am-2pm, thus the “walk window,” meaning the mid-day walk window is competitive and not guaranteed.

  • A “walk window” refers to the timeframe given to start (please bold or underline this and not include the *) service. This is due to things like unexpected delays, emergencies, mess-cleanups, and other related. This is necessary to serve everyone in a timely manner, and in best route optimization, so that no service gets ignored just because a day goes less than planned!

An example of a walk window is as follows for a 25 minute service

    target time: 12:30-12:55

    time shown to client: 11:30-1:30

so i gotta do safety and insurance and then cancelation policy, then my about me section right

  • Little Valentines offers basics training on a case-by-case basis, and at an additional add-on fee. As a student still, unfortunately behavior modification based training, such as reactivity, resource guarding, and other more challenging factors are not offered, however we can recommend you into the right direction!

Basics training includes, but is not limited to:

    • sit

    • down

    • implied stay (sit, down)

    • loose-leash manners

    • sitting at crosswalks and curbs

    • focus

    • recall training

A reward, and positive focused based training method is used for shaping these manners. Rewards such as high value treats, kibble, toys, and tugs are used, as well as verbal praise, and a clicker. We will go over your expectations and how to stay on the same page, because without everyone keeping up on the same work, some behaviors may not improve or will improve at a slower rate.

While we do use aversive tools that are given via pet owners, we do not supply or handle aversive tools on our own accord.
